'Boys' is directed by Shankar and produced by AM Ratnam on the banner of Sri Surya Movies with young talents in the lead. Expensive sets, rich taking, ultramodern graphics made the film more youthful. Music by AR Rahman is fantastic. On the negative side Shankar is known for good subject oriented movies, but the subject of boys is a routine romance story without any depth.
Coming to story, There are five boys who are good friends, one of them is Munna [Nakul] falls in love with Harini [Genelia D'Souja]. Harini treats Munna only as his friend. However after a few incidents Harini falls in love with Munna and they elope to Tirupathi to get married as there parents oppose them. Their friends also leave their houses to give moral support and help them. They continue their studies by doing some part-time jobs in hotels, bars and petrol pumps. In order to earn more money, they prepare an audiocassette with devotional songs on Ayyappa. As they were different from routine, they get sold like hot cakes. A little later, they again fall short of money to pay fee. At that time, some extremists meet the boys' gang and offer them Rs 50,000 for revolutionary songs. Unknowing the consequences they prepare a cassette. The police arrest them under POTA. Somehow, they get released following investigation by the police that they are in no way connected with extremist gang.
Later, they get debarred from the college for abetting the extremist gang. When they are in deep depression Sundaram ( Who helps Munna and Harini when they elope) encourages them to prepare a pop album. They meet Sony MD and asks him to sponsor the album. He does not accept initially but later recognizing the talent in the boys he agrees. Now comes the twist in the story, due to some miss understandings Harini leaves Munna and goes to her parent’s house. The Sony MD tells them that he would cancel the contract, if Harini did not participate in the album. Harini's mother proposes that her daughter will sing only on one condition that Munna accept for divorce. To promote his friends and for their future, Munna accepts to take divorce. Their album becomes very popular and even bag MTV award. Finally all the miss understandings are solved and Munna and Harini unite.
The highlights of Boys are that for the first time in the Indian film history, a total of 62 cameras were used to shoot a song by using Time Freeze Technic. Choreography and cinematography is excellent. Adnan Sami and lucky Ali also sang a song for the movie. Saboo Cyril's art direction is excellent. To sum up Shankar has done an excellent job with the technical part, but the story is not impressive.
