Khatharnack

Nothing katharnak about it!

Trying to make a 'different' film indeed is a painstaking job for any director. But doing a less than ordinary film in the bane of a 'different' film is the most common practice in the Telugu film industry. When the usual hits have the police having their informers within the rowdy gang to find out the secrets, here the director thought very 'differently' and has the rowdies placing an informer into the police department. Doesn't this sound 'different' to you! Yes, this is Katharnak, the second film of the choreographer-director Amma Rajashekar.

In the name of a 'different' film, the director plays on the nerves of the audience and irritates them. With "mass" being the main focus the film compromises on all other aspects like story, characterization, music, dialogues, et al. Moreover the lead pair – Ravi Teja and the all beautiful Ileana – is mere dolls dancing with skin show all through the film.

Much ado...
Not all new stories that has been picked up to make Katharnak, in fact you have seen all of them in earlier films. With no so good to hear music numbers and lewd choreography the film is all the more boring and looks aimless right from the first 20 minutes itself.

Dassu played by Ravi Teja is a local small time goonda. He is picked up by a rowdy gang since its don wanted to place an informer into the police department so that he could know the plans of the police and play safe game while doing his regular illegal business. Dassu is handed over to the don close associate – lawyer – and is asked to get him trained and put him into the police department.

The lawyer starts from basics ie sending Dassu to school to complete his tenth (this is indeed very foolish of the lawyer who roams around with donzens of rowdies and is unable to procure a fake tenth certificate). Here Dassu encounters with the beautiful damsel Nakshtra played by Ileana. She is teacher in the school, but never looks so with her costumes scantly covering her vital parts. And you guessed it right, the boy falls in love but the teacher rejects him. The lawyer who is facing a tough task to make Dassu study notices the love and uses this as a placard to make him study.

Our hero studies and becomes a traffic policeman, but the don is not impressed. He wants Dassu to become a inspector in the crime department and not in traffic. Events are made in such a way that Dassu lands in crime department where Prakash Raj is his boss.

The story takes a turn with don meeting Dassu and asking him to kill Raja Ravindra (who is later revealed as brother of the heroine), though hesitant the don forces him to do the act. After this Dassu repents and takes to lawyer to Nakshtra's house to show the grieving family. The lawyer decides support Dassu. Having understood that Dassu and the lawyer have changed their minds, the don tries to kill lawyer. Dassu rescues him and ultimately kills the don to save everybody from the evil forces!

Ravi Teja looks sick and very ugly as the school going man. It is time he acts differently. All through you have the feeling that this is Ravi teja and nothing of the character Dassu is reflected. His dance movements are also just the same old stock movements. Maybe that is the 'difference' he provides to the viewers. Ileana is more comfortable sashaying with little clothing on her body, all through there isn't even a single close up of the girl's face, but you have lots of shots of her back and navel. In fact sashays with semi clad dress in front of the school student, wish we could also get admission to such schools!

The comedy is all through since you have Ravi Teja doing all the acts of a buffoon, you also have the regular comedians who have nothing significant to play and not even a single good joke which you could carry back with you.

Technically all the departments had little role to enhance the film, they were just there to support this mediocre work. Keeravani's music is not worth mentioning, you are reminded of lots of songs including Amitabh's Don.

After all the hue and cry, you start wondering if Amma Rajashekar couldn't get a better story and script to work upon. The effort they put to translate their perversion into dances, if put into developing the script it would serve better purpose for himself and also for the Telugu audience.
