Lakshyam

Gopichand-Jagapathi Babu-Anushka starrer 'Lakshyam' has average music, average storyline and average screenplay. Neither can it be called a bad movie, nor does it come under memorable cinema.

Plot:
Police officer Bose (Jagapathi Babu), his wife (Kalyani), daughter (Baby Kalki Mitra), parents (Kota, Vijaya Singh) and younger brother Chandu (Gopichand) make a picture perfect family. 'Section' Shankar is a criminal that is on Bose's list of rowdies he wants to fix. He evades arrest cleverly with bigwigs like the DIG and the home minister on his side. A hundred crore loss of a bank and the suspicious death of the bank's chairman are linked to him. Bose is on the trail while his brother Chandu also gets on his wrong side. Together they struggle to get rid of the villain.

Story, Screenplay and Direction:
It starts off interestingly enough. The first few scenes, with Indu (Anushka) escaping from her own wedding, Chandu's fight scene and the beginning of the flashback is well executed. The first half, especially the interactions between Chandu and Indu, the confusion of identities and the comedy generated is fun to watch. Brahmanandam and Venumadhav also supply a dose of humor.

The second half is more intense, and somewhere it gets predictable and boring. Laden with fights, revenge and blood, it is nothing we haven't seen before. It gets repetitive, and that is the undoing of the movie. Even so, it does not become intolerable, and the climax comes soon enough with Ashish Vidhyarthi's entry as a cop.

The good guys struggle, face many difficulties and finally finish off the bad guys. There is a lot of killing, done so without even flinching once. That's Telugu cinema, and 'Lakshyam' is not out of the ordinary. Raghubabu's crackers ring tone is ready to be aped by many. Gopichand-Anushka chemistry is good.

Performances:
As always, Jagapathi Babu has good screen presence. He is in form and looks the part of an honest cop. Whether he uses 'Santoor soap' or not, like his daughter in the movie says, is debatable. Gopichand as his younger brother is good, and his scenes in the first half bring some mirth to the movie. Anushka makes a good pair with Gopichand. Kalyani is convincing, but she's done this type of a role many a time before. Kota displays his versatility, Ashish Vidhyarthi does a good job and Raghubabu's character is well written. Yashpal Sharma as Section Shankar is credible.

Music and Dance:
The songs and the picturization are just about average. 'Niluvave' stands out.

Last Word:
There is humor, romance and action in the first half. The second half turns into a revenge drama and gets slightly repetitive. Overall, it is an average movie. Watchable, but not memorable.
