'Chennakesava Reddy' is another Rayalaseema faction film on a very routine track. This story is no different. The hero stays somewhere and returns to his village to wreak vengeance. Balakrishna plays the dual role of father and son - a factionist and a sincere police officer, respectively. The father-son clash looks routine and dilutes the spirit of the movie.
Bharat is an honest ACP posted in Mumbai. He falls in love with Preethi (Shriya), who is the daughter of a DIG (Vizag Prasad). Bharat's native town is Pulivendula in Rayalaseema. Bharat's whereabouts are a guarded secret, as his family enemy Dhanunjay Reddy is on the prowl to kill him.
A police officer (Sivakrishana) stationed at Pulivendula keeps a check on Dhanunjay Reddy and his men. He irritates Dhanujay Reddy and as a result that police officer is demoted and posted as a jailer in Tihar Central Jail. He notices a statue in the village and learns that it is of one Chennakesava Reddy, supposed to have been dead. Chennakesava Reddy is the father of Bharat.
Sivakrishana is later transfered to Tihar Jail where he finds Chennakesava Reddy serving sentence for the last 22 years. He manages to get him out legally. Chennakesava Reddy's return turns out to be a big event for the natives of Pulivendula, including his wife Devi (Tabu). The son Bharat who was also transferred to the same place tries to check the father’s efforts to take revenge. This friction between father and son proves to be the weakest point of the film. There comes the flashback at this stage, explaining why Chennakesava Reddy is bent upon taking revenge. Will father take the revenge and will father and son come to terms forms the rest of the story.
The characterization of Chenna Kesava Reddy is not done effectively. Balakrishna presents well the two roles of father and son. Devayanai who plays Chennakesava's sister did very well in emotional scenes , while Tabu and Shriya just play secondary roles. Screenplay of the film is pretty loose. Mani Sarma's music score is interesting.
